Two days later, Ye woke up in the hospital.

Parents, the head teacher, and a few police officers surrounded the hospital bed, patiently helping Ye recall what happened on that day.

At first, Ye started to talk about the ghostly incident, but soon realized it would be too much to tell them the whole story.

He knew they wouldn't believe in any vengeful spirit rituals and would instead think he was mentally unstable.

So Ye pretended to have amnesia, going along with their narrative to gradually figure out their hypothesis.

In the end, Ye and they jointly pieced together this version of the story:

First, Ye discovered an unknown underground space in the old library archives. Out of curiosity, he consulted Grandma Hua, an old alumna, about the history and then explored the underground space.

Principal Dai, who was discussing the upcoming anniversary with Grandma Hua and other old alumni, mentioned Ye's disappearance.

Worried about Ye's safety, they went to the air-raid shelter to find him but unfortunately set off some leftover Japanese explosives, resulting in their deaths.

The head teacher noticed Ye’s absence and, with the help of the security guard, found the air-raid shelter with its broken gate, eventually locating Ye.

The police criticized Ye for his reckless behavior and for causing the accidental deaths of the two elderly scholars, while also praising him for uncovering historical evidence of the Japanese Army's germ warfare and atrocities against Chinese citizens.

The two elderly scholars, who had no children or relatives, would be given a grand ceremony by the school for their burial.

"What about Fuzi? Is he okay?"

"Fuzi? Who's Fuzi?" The police and the head teacher looked puzzled.

"My roommate, Du Fulin, the class (2) sports commissioner."

Ye's mother cried, thinking Ye's brain had been affected.

"Child, what roommate? You've always lived alone in a double room dormitory."

Ye was about to argue, but then he swallowed his words.

Could it be that Fuzi...

Ye suddenly realized that there might be hidden truths and quickly pretended to have memory problems to get by.

In the following days, Ye went through various archival clippings in the old library and finally found some clues:

Twenty years ago, a high school student named Du Fulin, who was the student council president, was found dead in the air-raid shelter. Without external injuries, it was suspected he died of suffocation due to lack of oxygen.

The clippings included a blurry photo.

Ye was shocked to recognize the student in the photo as his roommate, Fuzi.

He had died twenty years ago?

Then who had been living with Ye, leading him into this maze? Human or ghost?
