I caught a glimpse of Pei Ting's figure, with pale green and sticky zombie blood on his white short sleeves.

I majored in economics, but Pei Ting always outshined me.

As the perennial second-best, I've long held a grudge against him.

I was about to show off the fifty crystal nuclei I just collected.

Suddenly, a strange and ominous sound came from behind, unsettling and chilling!

"Crunch—"

The sound of flesh rubbing and dragging on the ground was dense and overwhelming.

I saw the sluggish, gray-eyed zombies, like a torrential rain, attacking us with sluggish movements!

My roommate Jia Jia raised her head beside me, sounding arrogant, "You guys call yourselves zombies? I heard you're wild?"

"Damn it, it's a zombie tide!" I grabbed her hand and hurriedly shouted to other classmates who were unaware of the situation, "The zombie tide is coming! Run!!"

Jia Jia quickly realized and apologized, "Oh, I'm so sorry, zombie brother. I didn't mean to offend you! Look into my clear eyes, there's a touch of foolishness. I'm just a love-struck university student!"

Everyone dared not linger upon hearing the sound and started running, pulling and urging one another.

Run!

Hurry up and run!

It'll be too late if we don't!

I suddenly looked towards the place where Pei Ting had been just now.

There was no one beside him, and it seemed he was dealing with the crystal nuclei inside the zombies' brains.

If he didn't hear what I just shouted, he might not be able to escape when the zombie tide really arrives!

I dislike him, but in such a dangerous moment, I shouldn't betray my own conscience.

Whose life is not valuable?

I looked at Chen Wen and my roommate Jia Jia, who were holding my hand, and gritted my teeth.

"You guys go first, Pei Ting is still over there!"

They looked at each other and tightly held onto my hand.

"Then we'll go with you, more people means more strength!"

"No need!"

I didn't waste time with them. In the midst of the dense zombie background, I lifted the Gatling gun and turned towards Pei Ting's direction, running.

Sensing his gaze, I even raised my eyebrows at him.

I smirked and boasted, "Envious, huh? I won't give it to you!"

He heard the commotion and obviously knew something.

Quickly shifting from passive to active, he tightly grabbed my hand and looked into the distance, saying in a low voice, "Follow me."

He led me into a conference room and quickly closed the door without making a sound.

The zombies have the most sensitive sense of smell and hearing. Once they catch a whiff of blood, they can track it down.

I took a deep breath and took out a bag of crystal nuclei from my backpack, continuing to show off to him.

"I've already killed fifty zombies. I should be stronger than you, right?"

Pei Ting's gaze was calm as he agreed, "Hmm, very strong."

I asked, "Then how many have you killed?"

He seemed reluctant to answer but had an obvious appearance of a weak and bookish student.

It didn't seem like he was particularly strong.

Under my repeated questioning, he finally moved his lips and said, "Seventy."

"Damn!"

He's not human!

The zombies passed by outside, moving slowly, their bodies scraping and rubbing against the ground.

I suddenly covered Pei Ting's mouth and made a gesture for him to be silent.

When there was no more movement, I realized with a start that my palm was itching and tingly from the irregular, warm breath he exhaled.

And there was a soft touch.

I realized it was his lips.

My heart started pounding, and I quickly let go of his hand and moved a step away.

I sat down on the ground.

Pei Ting was stunned for a moment before sitting down beside me, his black eyes half-closed, as if he casually asked, "I thought... you hatedme?"

I glanced at him and replied, "I do hate you, but... in this situation, it doesn't matter."

He chuckled softly and said, "Fair enough."

We sat in silence for a while, listening to the faint sounds of the zombies outside.

I couldn't help but ask, "Why did you save me? I thought you were dealing with the crystal nuclei."

Pei Ting sighed and looked at me with a hint of sadness in his eyes. "I may be good at fighting zombies, but that doesn't mean I'm heartless. We may not be the best of friends, but I couldn't just leave you behind when you shouted for help. Besides, it's not just about survival in this world; it's about holding on to our humanity."

His words struck a chord within me. I had been so focused on my own resentment and desire to outshine him that I had lost sight of the bigger picture.

As we sat there, waiting for the opportune moment to escape, I realized that Pei Ting and I were not so different after all. We were both just trying to survive in this post-apocalyptic world, facing the same dangers and challenges.

When the time came, we made our move, sneaking past the zombies and reuniting with the rest of our classmates who had managed to escape.

As we regrouped and caught our breath, I looked at Pei Ting and said, "Thank you, for saving me back there."

He smiled and replied, "You're welcome. Just remember, in times like these, it's important to stick together and help each other out. We're all in this together."

From that day on, my perspective changed. I no longer saw Pei Ting as my rival, but rather as an ally in this harsh world. Together, we faced countless challenges, fought off hordes of zombies, and built a bond of trust and friendship.

In the face of adversity, it was not our differences that defined us, but our shared humanity and the willingness to help one another.

And in the midst of a zombie apocalypse, that was something truly remarkable.
