The next morning, we went to the police station to report the case.
The investigating officer's surname was Wang. Officer Wang pointed at the person in the surveillance footage and asked, "Is this the person?"
"Yes, that's the woman!" I replied confidently after watching the footage.
Officer Wang's face showed a hint of surprise, and he coughed lightly before saying, "Actually, this is a man!"
My husband and I exchanged glances, both of us shocked.
"How could it be a man?" I involuntarily raised my voice due to the shock.
"Well, you haven't been back for a few years, so you don't know about his situation." Officer Wang seemed to be reminiscing. "His name is Zhang Sanyuan, but people in town now call him Zhang Crazy. He used to be a normal kid with excellent academic performance. We were even classmates in primary school. But I heard that about ten years ago, something happened to him, and he turned out like this, acting crazy every day, wearing women's clothes and wigs, wandering around. His parents gave up on him and let him be."
Listening to this, I couldn't help but feel a sense of sorrow.
"Has he ever trespassed into someone else's house before?" my husband asked.
"We haven't received any similar reports before, so I don't think so. I'm also not sure how he suddenly ended up at your house last night." Officer Wang scratched his head, showing his confusion.
"We will visit him to verify the situation, but..." Officer Wang hesitated, his face showing a struggle.
"If you have something to say, just say it." I could tell that Officer Wang was hesitant.
"Well, you see, this old classmate of mine, his family isn't well-off, and his parents are disabled. They belong to a low-income household. Plus, he has a mental disorder. So, I was thinking, if he hasn't caused any harm to you, could you..."
I understood Officer Wang's unspoken request. He hoped that we wouldn't pursue the matter.
Just as I was about to agree, my husband firmly said, "No, we can't just let this lunatic go on. Who knows what trouble he might cause in the future? We must give him some form of punishment and teach him a lesson."
I tugged at my husband's sleeve and whispered, "Honey..."
My husband looked at me affectionately and said, "I won't allow anyone or anything with potential danger to harm you. Thinking about that person standing silently by our bed last night sends shivers down my spine. If we hadn't woken up early, who knows what could have happened." Finally, Officer Wang decided to detain him for five days, and my husband reluctantly agreed.
As we sat in the car heading home, I stared out the window, lost in thought. I happened to see a small hill near our house and suggested going for a walk there.
This small hill didn't have any special scenery, so there weren't many tourists. Only locals would come to climb it in the morning for exercise.
We reached the top of the hill in no time.
It was almost noon, the hottest time of the day, so there were hardly any people on the hill.
I stood on a rock close to the edge of the cliff, with my hands open, enjoying the gentle breeze. It felt quite pleasant.
My husband stood behind me, smiling as he watched me.
I looked into the distance and pointed to the national highway ahead, saying, "That's where my parents had an accident and died."
I felt my husband's hand resting on my shoulder, silently comforting me.
I sniffed and continued, "Since I was young, I've been accustomed to a loveless and insincere married life. I never thought about getting married until I met you."
"That's why I made a will early on. If I die, I will liquidate all my shares and donate them to Hope Elementary School."
"But after meeting you, you gave me a warm home and a different experience of marriage."
"Honey, I've always wanted to say thank you to you!"
I turned around and locked eyes with my husband, and in that moment, I kissed his lips passionately.
