That night, the door was indeed smashed. This door must have been newly replaced.

Why did my husband lie to me?

I furrowed my brows in contemplation.

"So you found out!"

A man's voice came from behind.

I was startled.

It turned out to be my husband!

I reproached him, "You walk so quietly, you scared me!"

My husband, with an innocent look, said, "I called out to you, but you didn't hear."

I didn't dwell on it with him, and bluntly asked, holding the wood chips in my hand, "What's going on? The door was replaced, was the original one smashed? Someone did break into our house, right?"

My husband, looking helpless, said, "You jumped to conclusions. These wood chips were leftover pieces from when I made a new kennel for Wangcai. I noticed that there were some remaining materials from making the door, so I used them to make a new home for Wangcai. I wanted to give you a surprise."

When we got married, my husband said he wanted to personally build a home for me.

So most of the renovations in our house, like the door and cabinets, were made by my husband.

I used to have many dogs, but unfortunately, none of them stayed with me for very long.

Wangcai was the dog that stayed with me the longest.

My husband also knew that I was very fond of Wangcai, so I believe it was to make me happy that he specially built a new kennel for Wangcai.

It seems I was thinking too much.

I leaned into my husband's arms, feeling down, and said, "I'm sorry, husband, I'm just too sensitive."

"It's okay, dear. You've just been cooped up at home for too long, leading to overthinking. Once we go to our hometown, I'll accompany you to go out and relax more often."

That night, I took my medicine and lay down on the bed to rest.

In a daze, I felt a pair of hands constantly wandering over me.

It seemed like someone was murmuring continuously in my ear, "Wife...wife..."

I wanted to scream for help, but my throat seemed to be choked and no sound came out.

I felt like I was floating in a dark ocean.

"Go away, go away..." I struggled incessantly.

Finally, I abruptly opened my eyes.

All around was quiet, and the orange light radiated a faint glow in the night.

I looked down and thankfully, my clothes weren't in disarray.

I washed my face in the bathroom and stared at my reflection in the mirror.

"Ah..."

A scream echoed throughout the house.

"What's wrong? What's wrong?" My husband rushed in from outside the room and hugged me, trying to comfort me.

I was so frightened that I was hunched over the sink, vomiting continuously.

Until my body could no longer support itself, I collapsed to the ground.

Trembling, I pointed at my clothes, "My clothes, my clothes... have been changed!"

After looking at my clothes, my husband frowned, "Are you mistaken? I remember that you were wearing this same outfit to bed."

"Impossible!" My eyes were bloodshot as I tugged at the neckline of my clothes, "These clothes, same style and color, I bought two. One has a curry sauce stain on the collar that won't come out. That's the one I wore to bed!"

My husband looked at my spotlessly clean collar, with a pensive expression.

"There must have been someone in the room. I don't want to stay here, I don't want to stay here!"

Disheveled, I urged my husband to take me away.

Helplessly, my husband had no choice but to give in to me.

Midnight, my husband drove us towards our hometown.

I leaned on the passenger seat, staring blankly out the window.

Suddenly, my husband's phone vibrated twice.

"Who's calling?"

My husband glanced at me and answered, "Okay, thanks Officer Xu. I'll personally come to your station to express my gratitude another day!"

Finishing the call, my husband wore a look of hesitation.

"Is there something else?"

I asked calmly.

My husband sighed, "The surveillance shows that you were sleeping in the bedroom all that time, there was no one coming in or out."

Although I had already anticipated this result, I was still unwilling to accept it.

"So there really wasn't anything out of the ordinary?" I continued to pursue.

My husband stared at my face for a long time before finally nodding slowly.
