“First of all, you, Ye Lan, deliberately fabricated a completely nonexistent third party for the police.”

Captain Xia nonchalantly put the cigarette back into the pack, with an expression that seemed to have seen right through me.

“You said you had several arguments with Yang Kai because of the third party, but you didn't know any relevant information about them. This doesn't conform to common sense, so I never believed it.”

I was infuriated by him: “There are always exceptions!”

“There are exceptions, but no one expected that this exception would happen to you.”

“All along, the stories between you, Yang Kai, and Liu Lei were told to me by you.”

“However, when I heard Liu Lei’s voice, I realized how big a lie you had told us.”

Captain Xia looked very relaxed. The more relaxed he seemed, the more nervous I became.

“When you first met Liu Lei, he was already dead. How could you hear his voice!”

“Dead people don’t speak, but words do.”

Captain Xia said he had taken those drafts from Liu Lei’s study and studied them carefully. At first, he simply thought Liu Lei was deliberately imitating Yang Kai’s handwriting, until his curiosity got the best of him and he checked the contents of those drafts.

Each piece of paper contained lyrics of various songs, titles like “Rainbow”, “Lovers in the Air”, “Embrace”...

It could be said that Liu Lei had a very diverse taste in music.

“But these songs have one thing in common.”

Captain Xia maintained his calm demeanor, with an expression of someone who had seen through everything.

“Miss Ye, in your story, the first half is correct. Yang Kai did have a third party, we just assumed it was a woman from the beginning.”

“Now, if we restore everyone’s positions, everything makes sense.”

“Moreover, you might not know, our search of your home was very meticulous, including the Bluetooth devices in the living room.”

“In one of them, we found a record of a playback on August 13th, the day you had an argument with Yang Kai.”

“And actually, whether you followed your line of thought or mine, there were many loopholes, which is one of the reasons I have always suspected you.”

“Miss Ye, up to now, I have pointed out several key doubts, you can’t escape. As for the truth, I think it would be better if you tell me yourself.”

I closed my eyes, and knew clearly I had no other choice.

After a moment of silence, I spoke.

That day, Yang Kai and I did not have an argument, because he was already dead. I had put sleeping pills in his water and he drank it without any suspicion.

I had long wanted to kill him, but it required meticulous planning.

First, I created a temporal gap to provide an alibi for myself.

After Yang Kai drank the sleeping pills and died, I played the pre-recorded argument through the Bluetooth speaker. It wasn't the first time we argued because of Liu Lei, and the audio clip was carefully edited by me.

Sound is affected by spatial obstacles and gets distorted, making it hard to identify a recording, and the information I wanted to provide was just “Yang Kai and I were arguing.”

Next, I dealt with Liu Lei.

After walking out of the community with my suitcase, I immediately called Liu Lei to meet me, to prevent him from going to find Yang Kai after hearing the argument.

When we met, I knocked him out without hesitation. I practiced Taekwondo, and Liu Lei’s thin and weak frame was no match for me.

After he fainted, I stuffed him into the suitcase.

To avoid police suspicion, I deliberately went shopping, bought a bottle of wine and some cosmetics.

At four o’clock, I left the mall, went to the restroom to dress up, then poured the wine all over Liu Lei, took a cab to an out-of-town rental, and hanged him while he was unconscious. Originally, I wanted to keep him in the suitcase, but I was afraid of raising suspicion when putting the suitcase in the cab, as Liu Lei was not dead yet.

At nine o’clock, I checked into a hotel and happily played outside for two or three days.

Everything thereafter followed my plan.

I pretended to reconcile and return home, panicked when I saw Yang Kai’s body, and called the police. I knew they would definitely suspect me, so I prepared my words in advance and deliberately shifted the suspicion to Liu Lei.

Of course, Liu Lei had to die; otherwise, all my efforts would have been meaningless.

I knew with the police’s capabilities, they would definitely find that Liu Lei was murdered, so it was crucial to hide my identity as the “night worker.”

I could only rely heavily on the fabricated “Yang Kai’s ex”, a crucial but nonexistent person to lead the police astray.

But I never expected that those drafts would become the key for Captain Xia to solve the case ahead of time!

Captain Xia sighed, “If you knew you didn’t love him, breaking up would have been easier. Why resort to murder?”

“Break up? It’s not as simple as you think.”

I laughed, my gaze at him turning colder.
