The next day, I arrived at the city bureau early.

Not long after I got to the bureau, the forensic doctor, Old Wu, came out with the autopsy report.

"I conducted a toxicology test on the body yesterday, but no toxic substances were found."

Old Wu, wearing gold-rimmed glasses, handed the autopsy report to me and Chen Wei.

"So, Liu Hu's death was indeed a sudden event?"

I found it hard to believe.

After all, through the investigation yesterday, whether it was that segment of the recording or Liu Hu's wife's large insurance policy, they both hinted that there was more to Liu Hu’s death.

"Not exactly." Old Wu shook his head, "Because I discovered something else."

Old Wu opened the autopsy report.

"I found propranolol in the deceased's blood."

Old Wu glanced at me and Chen Wei. Seeing the confusion on our faces, he continued to explain:

"This is a blood pressure medication. I checked Liu Hu's medical records; he didn't have hypertension."

With Old Wu's explanation, Chen Wei and I immediately understood what happened.

That night, Liu Hu had been drugged. When he encountered Pei Jianye, the drug was taking effect, which is why he stumbled twice in the surveillance video.

Even if he hadn't encountered Pei Jianye, it's likely that the drug would have affected him while driving, leading to the car accident.

In other words, this was indeed a murder case!

Since it's a murder case, there has to be a murderer.

The primary suspect at the moment is Liu Hu's wife.

After all, with Liu Hu dead, she would inherit all his property.

Moreover, she had taken out a life insurance policy for Liu Hu a few months ago.

With this lead, Chen Wei immediately notified the detectives monitoring Liu Hu's home to bring his wife back to the city bureau to assist with the investigation.

Over half an hour later, Liu Hu's wife, escorted by detectives, entered the interrogation room of the city bureau.

Seeing the panic on her face, I felt a surge of doubt.

Could it really be this seemingly delicate woman who plotted her husband's murder?

If she was the mastermind, what role did the man named "Brother Long" play?

And who exactly is the "pursuer of justice"?

Why did they have the recording of Liu Hu and "Brother Long"?

And why did they send the recording to me?

With all these questions in mind, I paced back and forth outside the interrogation room, anxious to rush in and get answers.

Although I was involved in the case as a "support investigator," I wasn't a police officer and couldn't participate in the interrogation. I could only wait anxiously outside the interrogation room.

After more than half an hour, Chen Wei came out of the interrogation room.

"How did it go? Did she confess?"

I hurriedly asked.

Chen Wei shook his head and walked to the courtyard.

He took out a cigarette, lit it, and took a puff. Only then did his tightly furrowed brows slightly relax.

"It's probably not her. When we presented Liu Hu's cause of death and merely questioned her, she spilled everything."

"She said she bought the life insurance for Liu Hu because she knew he was involved in shady dealings and was bound to get into trouble sooner or later, so she was taking a gamble."

"This woman is ruthless, hoping for her husband's misfortune. For money, she’d rather be a widow." I couldn't help but click my tongue.

Hearing this, Chen Wei laughed.

"You're mistaken there. This woman has a lover, and even the child isn't Liu Hu’s."

"This..." I widened my eyes, then speculated a few seconds later, "Could it be her lover who did it?"

"Probably not." Chen Wei shook his head, "They wouldn't have the guts. The culprit is likely someone connected to 'Brother Long.'"

Just as Chen Wei finished speaking, a detective came running out:

"Captain Chen, we've identified 'Brother Long'!"
