Over the next week, my father-in-law, mother-in-law, and Li Hui did not appear again.
My father-in-law called, saying Li Hui was emotionally unstable, and they needed to take care of her first.
My mother-in-law's voice came from the side: "Why bother telling him so much? Just need to test his patience, otherwise, he might think our family is easy to mess with!"
My father-in-law hurriedly hung up the phone.
I knew what my mother-in-law meant; she thought I should unconditionally obey and submit to Li Hui.
My daughter was undergoing surgery in the hospital, while that beast was still at home living comfortably, and they wanted me to let that beast off the hook. How could there be such a reason!
I immediately had a friend contact a dog meat restaurant, giving them my apartment building address.
I told the restaurant owner that there was a dog in our building corridor that kept defecating everywhere, asking them to take it away and deal with it.
Li Hui kept a dog but was too lazy to walk it, let alone take it downstairs for its needs.
She often let the dog run out by itself, sometimes relieving itself on the lawn downstairs, sometimes messing around in the corridor.
I had mentioned many times that letting the dog out like this was not acceptable, but Li Hui didn't take it seriously.
Me: What if the dog bites someone?
Li Hui: My dog never bites people; I know my dog best.
Me: This dog defecates and urinates everywhere; neighbors have complained several times.
Li Hui: Can they control public places? It's not like the dog urinated in their homes!
Later, since I couldn't reason with Li Hui, I had to take on the task of walking the dog, picking up after it in the lawn every day with a plastic bag.
Now that I'm not at home, the dog is back to its old ways, freely frolicking outside and defecating and urinating in the corridor.
The restaurant owner initially found it troublesome and didn't want to catch the dog. I promised to pay him five hundred if he caught the dog, and he immediately agreed.
As I expected, the dog was wandering around the corridor. When the restaurant owner caught it, the dog was about to defecate on a neighbor's carpet.
However, I didn't expect that after Li Hui discovered the dog was missing, she made a huge fuss, called the police, summoned all relatives and friends to find the dog, and even called me to ask if I had hidden the dog.
After receiving my denial, she didn't believe it, rushed to the hospital, and searched my daughter's ward thoroughly just to find the dog.
Since my daughter was admitted to the hospital, this was the second time she entered my daughter's ward, all just to find the dog.
I looked at her coldly.
Li Hui's gaze lingered on the bandages on my daughter's face for a moment, pursed her lips, then continued to look under the bed for any sign of the dog.
After confirming the dog was not in the ward, she was about to leave.
I stopped her:
"Li Hui, if it weren't for you giving birth, I would have been guarding the operating room door. I can't believe you're Mengmeng's real mother."
Li Hui, impatiently: "I'm in a very bad mood right now, don't provoke me."
"Even a stranger would feel sorry seeing Mengmeng bitten like this, what about you?"
Li Hui started screaming: "I said don't provoke me!! Are you done yet? Qiqi is missing! You keep harping on this! It's just a bite, not like she's dead! Children heal quickly, a few days and she'll be fine!"
"Why do you, a grown man, keep harping on this? You've found a reason to get rid of the dog, I knew you had a problem with Qiqi, now that the dog is missing, are you satisfied?"
Li Hui's voice was too harsh, and my daughter, startled, started crying anxiously.
I gently comforted and patted my daughter, not daring to even pick her up for fear of touching her wounds.
When I turned around, I realized Li Hui had left the ward at some point.
In the end, Li Hui found Qiqi at the dog meat restaurant, just in time before the owner could slaughter the dog.
Li Hui was furious, called the police to arrest the restaurant owner.
The restaurant owner explained that the dog was not on a leash, had no muzzle, wasn't accompanied by its owner, just a stray dog, so he brought the dog back.
After a police investigation, it was confirmed that what the restaurant owner said was true, and Li Hui was given a lecture.
Neighbors took the opportunity to report to the police, saying Qiqi had bitten a child before, and now Li Hui was still letting the dog run wild outside, defecating and urinating in the corridor.
Upon hearing about the child being bitten, the police decided to intervene and investigate.
Li Hui, self-righteously: "It was my own child who was bitten, it's my family matter, no need for others to interfere."
The police reprimanded: "Take care of the dog. If there's another report of the dog being off-leash outside, it will be treated as a stray dog."
Li Hui's face turned pale.
