The end of the world has been over a month, and after enduring high temperatures, many people have run out of food.
Everyone saw that they could exchange for food, so they began to come out of their homes one after another.
More and more people gathered on the empty ground downstairs. I originally thought that there were hardly any people left in our community, but it seems that there are still hundreds of households.
I was focused on looking through the telescope when suddenly, from a window on our building's ground floor, there came a "creaking" sound.
I was about to stick my head out to take a look when suddenly a bad feeling rose in my heart.
At that moment, a familiar voice came from downstairs, "There are people here, and there's plenty of food upstairs."
It was Wang Peng! He's actually still alive.
Soon, many people started walking towards our building. Although we knew there were more than ten doors blocking their way downstairs, making it impossible for them to come up, it's better to be safe than sorry. So we took out the clubs and batons we had bought earlier.
Carefully, Xing Feng and I went down a few floors to assess the situation, and soon we heard laughter echoing in the corridor.
A rough male voice said, "This household has so many doors, there must be plenty of food inside. If we open this door, we won't have to worry about food anymore."
We used the telescope to look through the windows along the corridor.
The man with a scruffy beard seemed quite satisfied with the information provided by Wang Peng, so he casually threw a piece of moldy bread on the ground.
Wang Peng hurriedly knelt down to pick it up and stuffed it into his mouth without caring about anything else.
The others watched this scene and burst into laughter.
But soon, their laughter faded away. These doors were made of pure steel, and despite their attempts to smash and pry them open, they couldn't succeed even after half an hour. So Xing Feng asked me to go back first, and we took turns keeping watch here.
I returned to the upper floor where my best friend had already prepared a meal. There was a plate of braised pork and a stir-fried vegetable dish. Although there are zombies outside now and we're under siege, looking at such a sumptuous meal momentarily made us forget our worries.
The braised pork was fatty but not greasy, tender and chewy, and the vegetables were grown on the rooftop, guaranteed to be pesticide-free.
After finishing the meal, my best friend brought out a watermelon.
It was stored from before the apocalypse, kept in the refrigerator.
On such a hot day, eating the cool watermelon was truly a pleasure.
As I watched Wang Peng downstairs gobble up the moldy bread given to him by those people, and then looked at the juicy watermelon in my hand, I felt that the watermelon was even sweeter.
Having eaten our fill, we continued to keep an eye on what was happening downstairs.
Those people struggled for a while but couldn't open the door. Frustrated, the leader kicked Wang Peng in the chest, and he fell against the door behind him.
The door, which was already about to collapse, fell down completely.
A foul smell emanated from inside the room.
A few men walked in with suspicion and soon came out carrying a bucket covered with a middle-aged woman's jacket.
When my best friend saw that thing, she vomited.
After recovering, her voice turned heavy, "Those are human bones."
I realized that I hadn't seen Wang Peng's mother all this time, and I thought she might be sick.
But I never imagined...
He's simply an animal.
I couldn't help but vomit as well.
The other people must have understood what kind of meat it was. The bearded man in charge kicked Wang Peng again in the chest.
"You even ate your own mother's flesh. Are you even human?"
The remaining people, who were already frustrated about not being able to open the door, were now disgusted. They swarmed him, punching and kicking Wang Peng, and soon he stopped breathing.
I was too lazy to watch anymore. He brought this upon himself.
