I pretended to go out every day under the guise of fetching water, just to check the countdown of the zombie tide.

I don't know if it was the effect of the medicine I couldn't understand the instructions for that the hospital gave us before, but Chen Ze and Lan Yao haven't turned into zombies.

On the last day, I didn't go out.

The zombies seemed to know that they probably wouldn't see the rising sun.

They launched a final attack on humans just before dawn.

In the end, the zombies found the basement, and there were five of them blocking the entrance.

We defended against their attack.

Fortunately, the space was small, so they couldn't all attack at once.

The flamethrower killed two of them, but it was useless after that.

Chen Ze and I each smashed a zombie's head.

At that moment, Lan Yao chose Chen Ze to protect her between him and me.

But when the last zombie tried to rip Chen Ze's heart out with its claws, he didn't hesitate to pull Lan Yao in front of him.

One strike, one kill.

The zombie's sharp nails pierced Lan Yao's throat and scratched Chen Ze's chest.

I smashed the zombie's head with an axe from behind.

A knife stabbed diagonally into my chest.

The zombie fell, and Chen Ze covered his wound, a triumphant smile on his face.

I pulled out the knife, splattering blood all over his face.

One second, ten seconds.

One minute, ten minutes.

We faced each other in silence, neither of us moving, for ten minutes.

Chen Ze watched as my blood drained, and my skin turned translucent.

And I just smiled, enjoying the fear draining from his face.

"Monster."

He murmured these two words.

I picked up the knife and made another cut on the major artery, making the blood flow even cleaner.

"Your cut was not enough. Let me add one for you."

I placed my palm on the wall, and an electronic voice sounded: "Fingerprint match successful."

The wall behind Chen Ze parted in two.

"If you're not satisfied with this body, there are more behind."

He mechanically turned his head to look at the room, which was as bright as day, with five identical bodies standing there, as well as Chen Chen, who was out of sorts.

"Sister, these five mannequins feel just like real people when you touch them."

That day, I directly brought Chen Chen into this secret base.

Inside, there was a self-sufficient solar generator, a refrigerator, a sofa, and a bed.

Except for the lack of internet signal, it had everything a one-bedroom apartment should have.

"Chen Chen, be a good girl and go back to the bedroom to play. I'll chat with this brother for a while."

This child is well-behaved, not asking why we are covered in blood, nor questioning the bodies on the ground behind us.

She took her tablet, which could only play offline games, and went back to the bedroom.
